Biography

Tamisha Civil made history on January 2, 2025, as the first woman of color to be sworn into the Massachusetts Governor’s Council for District 2 since its founding in 1780.

A seasoned criminal justice reformer, Councilor Civil has spent her career advocating for fairness and equity within the justice system. Her experience spans roles as an Associate Probation Officer, Victim Witness Advocate at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, and legal advocate for survivors of domestic violence—each reinforcing her commitment to human-centered reentry and victim support.

She currently serves on the Massachusetts Eastern Regional Commission on the Status of Women, empowering women statewide. Drawing from decades of collaboration with judges, attorneys, and law enforcement, she brings deep insight to her Council duties, particularly in vetting judicial nominations to ensure fairness and integrity across the courts.

A proud daughter of Haitian immigrants, Councilor Civil’s passion for justice is deeply personal. After witnessing her cousin’s wrongful imprisonment for 27 years before exoneration, she became determined to fight systemic inequities and invest in community-based solutions to prevent crime.

She holds a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice and Leadership from Northeastern University and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
